A young Mouse loved adventure. One day, while exploring the edge of a pond, he met a Frog who lived there.
“Why don’t you come visit my home?” croaked the Frog. “We’ll have a wonderful time together.”
The Mouse was eager to see new places, but he hesitated.
“I can swim a little,” he said, “but I’m not strong enough to cross the pond by myself.”
“I have the perfect solution,” replied the Frog.
The Frog tied the Mouse’s leg to his own with a strong reed.
“Now you’ll be perfectly safe,” he said.
With that, the Frog leaped into the water, pulling the Mouse in behind him.
At first, the Mouse tried to keep up. But before long, he struggled to stay afloat.
Instead of helping his new companion, the cruel Frog dragged the Mouse beneath the water until the poor Mouse drowned.
Before the Frog could untie the reed, a Hawk flying overhead spotted the Mouse floating on the surface.
The Hawk swooped down, grabbed the Mouse in its sharp talons, and flew away.
Because the Frog was still tied to the Mouse, he was carried off as well.
The Frog’s own cruel trick had become his downfall.
Moral: Those who try to harm others often end up suffering the consequences of their own actions.
